Yes or No to arranged marriages
Now, let's think it over about arranged marriages conducted over the decades and compare them with weddings in the modern age. What are their pros and cons? Are they still suitable and feasible? Here are a few of my views:
Arranged marriages :
Pros | Cons |
Your parents can choose a suitable candidate for you (status, wealth, characteristics) | Those features may be important to your parents but may not apply the same to you. Who knows if you might get a groom/bride who is smart and rich but ugly? |
The groom/bride is definitely from a good and proper family | Who cares if your partner is from a good family if your groom/bride is unsuitable? |
There are less divorces for arrange-married couples | You may be under tremendous pressure not to get a divorce despite the fact that you have a lot of reasons to! |
You can always say no after the first meeting with your future husband/wife | How can you tell whether you like or dislike your future partner through one meeting? |
You can always blame it on your parents for choosing the wrong candidate | The suffering is yours alone |
Your parents say ‘satisfaction guaranteed’ | You say ‘I don’t think so’ |
Self-decided marriages :-
Pros | Cons |
You know who you want to get married to | That’s why you are still single after the age of 40 cos you can’t find the right one |
You love your partner | Your parents might hate him/her |
You know when you want to get married and be prepared for it | You have been keeping your parents waiting for your wedding |
It is your decisions to make | It is also your blame to take if you’ve chosen the wrong candidate |
You can divorce him/her anytime | That’s why parents say that they should choose your partner for you |
You say ‘I know what I am doing’ | Your parents say ‘you will regret it’ |
So, what do you think?
